Ruwan Uduwerage-Perera

Ruwan Uduwerage-Perera is a former British Police Officer of British and Sri Lankan descent, a founding member and the first elected General Secretary to the National Black Police Association (1999-2003), a former national and international police trainer, and advisor and campaigner in the field of equality & diversity, and community engagement issues. 

As the Policing Diverse Communities Manager for the College of Policing (2003-2007), Ruwan was an adviser on equality, diversity and community engagement issues for the National Centre for Policing Excellence.  Ruwan was part of a small team, tasked by the National Police Chiefs' Council and the Home Office to research the Police response to the inter-ethnic civil disorders, which resulted in national guidance on Community Cohesion Policing.

Ruwan is actively involved in developing equality and diversity initiatives, and greater community engagement within both the voluntary and public sectors at regional, national and international levels. He is also involved in academic research within the criminal justice system and is a regular contributor to national and international debates on policing.

Ruwan is a visiting academic at Rashtriya Raksha University, Gujarat, India where he is a member of the International Faculty for criminology. 

For leisure, Ruwan enjoys researching all his areas of interest, walking his terriers around his home in the Highlands of Scotland, playing one of his many ukuleles, and canoeing.
