Course Summary
Practice Education Stage 1 & 2 is part of the post qualifying Social Work provision at UEL. This course is for qualified social workers who want to supervise students qualifying for their BA (Hons) Social Work or MA Social Work courses during their placements.
We run this course in partnership with Local Authorities. It is a regulatory body requirement that our practice educators are qualified to an appropriate level in line with The Practice Educator Professional Standards (PEPs). The course combines stages 1 & 2 of the PEPs, offering you the opportunity to become a stage 2 qualified practice educator within one academic year.
To apply for the course you must have a social work qualification and be registered with Social Work England. You must have at least two years post qualifying experience at the point of application and have approval from your agency to host a UEL student on placement for either 70 or 100 days. In exchange for placements, fees for practice education courses are adjusted.
This course is linked to your professional requirement as a social worker to provide evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as part of your continued registration with the social work regulator, Social Work England. They are also mapped to the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) for Social Work.
Practice Education Stage 1 & 2 Short Course Application
To apply for the Practice Education Stage 1 & 2 short course you will need to complete a personal statement, including your reasons for wanting to undertake professional development in this specialist area. Please provide details of how you can offer learning opportunities for a qualifying social work student, and how you can take on the role of inducting, supervising and assessing a student in line with national Practice Educator Professional Standards (PEPs).

Any agency which has not previously hosted UEL students on placement will need to take part in a quality assurance process before an application for the short course is considered.
There will be two intakes for the short course, in September and December.

Ten days of teaching
The course is a ten day taught course, including nine full days of classroom teaching and one day of online learning.
Continued Professional Development
This course meets the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements as set by Social Work England.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You must have been working in post-qualifying social work practice for at least two years.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
The Practice Education Stage 1 & 2 course is an accredited M level short course worth 40 credits. The course combines classroom and work-based learning, and you will be expected to supervise and assess a student on a social work placement of either 70 or 100 days. The course comprises classroom teaching and online learning led by lecturer Martina Kissi. Sessions will feature group discussions to promote a reflective approach to the task of practice education.
Teaching and learning will cover: preparing an induction programme, adult learning theory, reflective supervision, and holistic assessment. Content in relation to anti-oppressive practice will be embedded within the teaching and learning material. You will also learn how to develop teaching and learning tools to support a social work student.
YOUR FUTURE CAREER
Studying this course offers you the opportunity to update your skills in social work interventions and deepen your knowledge base about current research and practice in contemporary practice education. You can also apply for accredited prior learning through UEL's AEL system to help you progress towards achieving postgraduate awards.
FEE
The course has a fee waiver in place if a trainee practice educator offers a placement to a UEL social work student.
