This course is also available as a two year masters with an industrial placement year. The embedded industrial placement offers a unique opportunity to apply the skills learnt on real engineering projects.
What makes this course different
An award-winning course with our students regularly winning national prestigious prizes, such as the Structural Concrete Student Design Competition organised by the Concrete Centre and sponsored by Laing O’Rourke, which we won in 2019 (Sustainability Prize), 2018 and 2016.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
The course consists of a number of self-contained, taught modules, organised around the various areas of civil engineering.
The range of subjects covered includes Advanced Structural Analysis, Design in Steel and Concrete, Structural Stability and Dynamics, Intelligent Transport Systems, Soil Structure Engineering, and Highway and Railway Engineering.
The taught modules are complemented by a research dissertation project that you will undertake at the end of your course. This dissertation is your route to becoming an accredited chartered engineer.
There is a highly practical emphasis to our MSc. You will learn the basic theory and then apply it through working on projects in our extensive laboratories and during fieldwork.
These projects will provide you with the learning opportunities and practical skills you need in your future career. You will graduate with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the most up-to-date practices and theories in civil engineering.
About the industrial placement year
This course is also available as a two year master's with an industrial placement year. The industrial placement is designed to address the demands of the profession and give students a competitive edge when it comes to their career. The industrial placement component is for a duration of an academic year, i.e., normally 30 weeks including minimum 24 weeks of delivery time. It starts after students have successfully completed the 1st year of study, i.e., all the taught modules and the dissertation component of the MSc course which together form 180 credits. Please refer to the course specification for the summary of the course structure and further information.
Students on the MSc with Placement courses must pass all taught modules of their respective course plus dissertation to gain 180 credits, before they become eligible to progress to the next stage and undertake industrial placement. Students on the MSc course with placement will also normally be required to fulfil the 80% attendance requirement (on all modules) to be eligible to progress to the industrial placement. Students unable to meet the above requirements to progress successfully will normally be moved to the one-year full-time version of the course and their student visa, if any, will be curtailed accordingly.
It is ultimately the student's responsibility to secure their placement and the university cannot guarantee placements. The University will offer guidance and support and recommend students to many of our industrial partners that have expressed strong support and interest in the programme.
During the industrial placement period, you will undertake an internship within a partner organisation (or by means of alternative arrangements such as projects led by industry and carried out on campus) and complete a zero-credit Industrial Placement Module.
There are additional fees for the placement module (in the second year of the course), in addition to the fees for the taught modules and dissertation, paid in the first year.

To module assess the role of the engineer / construction manager in industry and the community. It investigates advances in engineering / construction technology and analyse its effect on the production process. The module will involve studying current management skills and the appropriate numerical techniques, contract procedures and financial controls.
Optional ModulesSoil Structure Engineering CloseSoil Structure Engineering
This module introduces the application of geotechnical engineering design approaches and in particular the concepts of soil/structure interaction to the design, construction and maintenance of deep foundations, excavations and flexible earth retaining structures.
Design in Steel and Concrete CloseDesign in Steel and Concrete
Structural design is a vital step in many construction, infrastructure and engineering projects in general. The module aims to provide advanced current design practice and assessment techniques as used in a modern design office; knowledge of recent research and the philosophy behind the relevant Codes of Practice and British Standards.
Advanced Structural Analysis CloseAdvanced Structural Analysis
The module aims to o provide advanced skills for the analysis of structures (such as buildings, roofs and bridges) as well as an opportunity to practice using current computing tools to perform such structural analysis. The module is very hands on and develops the students engineering judgement and equip them with necessary skills to be able to devise sensible modelling strategies and make sound decisions.
Structural Stability and Dynamics CloseStructural Stability and Dynamics
The module aims to provide you with a systematic understanding of advanced knowledge of structural stability and dynamics of structures; to enable you to critically appraise and apply current structural stability and dynamics analysis methods.
Highway and Railway Engineering CloseHighway and Railway Engineering
This module will provide you with the knowledge that will enable you to become competent in highway and railway engineering. You will gain the skills and appreciations of requirements, methods and techniques for designing and maintaining highway and railway pavement systems. The module will cover the impact of the roadway environment and the physical infrastructures assets like bridges, drains, etc.
Intelligent Transport Systems CloseIntelligent Transport Systems
This module aims to provide an introduction to the key concepts of transportation policy, transportation modelling and safety, along with an understanding of the technological and legal aspects of transportation as well as an awareness of environmental issues. The objective is to provide you with the knowledge that will enable you to become competent practitioners in transport systems and transport infrastructure areas.
Applied Research and Engineering Practice 1 CloseApplied Research and Engineering Practice 1
Applied Research skills are key to addressing engineering challenges and providing creative solutions. The module aims to provide students with an opportunity to explore a research topic in depth, with appropriate research methods, Interpret the results in an engineering context, provide critical discussion and conclusions, and compose a research dissertation. The students will undertake this in subject areas relevant to the programme they are enrolled on. It also allows them to plan and execute their work plan and manage their time as well as exercising their engineering judgment and applying principles of engineering practice. They are encouraged to experience engineering as problem solving, considering the systematic processes that engineers use to define and resolve problems.
