About us

STAMP is a major inter-disciplinary initiative in the School of Business & Law studying global and European political economy and their corresponding forms of governance required to address socio-economic/financial issues and risk-assess complex geopolitical conflicts and crises. In this context, STAMP promotes advanced and applied research within the field of social sciences.

The Centre hosts visiting fellowships, PhD students, runs advanced research seminars and workshops and houses the Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies (Routledge, eight issues a year since 1998). STAMP, which has national and international partnerships in most OECD countries, provides a platform for research cooperation and consultancy.

Seminars, workshops and impactful dissemination of research outputs

STAMP holds fortnightly seminars, where members of staff and PhD students from the  Royal Docks School of Business & Law, the University of East London and other universities present their ongoing research work. It also holds special events with public intellectuals and highly esteemed professionals, including Ambassadorial staff and practitioners engaged in decision-making processes at national, European and international levels.

Proceedings of workshops, seminars and conferences organised by STAMP have been published in such journals as Critical Sociology, Journal of Sustainable Tourism, Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies, Croatian Political Science Review, Cambridge Journal of Economics and many other academic outlets. Op-eds are often appearing in such websites as openDemocracy and The Conversation.

STAMP's seminar guests in the past have included Martin Wolf of Financial Times, Prof Andrew Gamble, Sheffield and Cambridge Universities, Prof  Bob Jessop, Lancaster University, Prof Werner Bonefeld, York University, Prof Emeritus Constantine Tsoukalas, University of Athens, (Greece), Prof Emeritus Donald Sassoon (Queen Mary University of London), Prof Radika Desai, University of Manitoba (Canada).

On 12 December 2017, STAMP organised an international workshop on two separable public policy models, that of 'Anglo-American' neo-liberalism and 'Austrian-German' ordoliberalism. The proceedings registered academic impact. Reviewed by the STAMP's co-directors, they were published in a special issue of Critical Sociology in spring 2019. An Introduction of 7,000 words by the co-directors preceded the publication of eight comprehensive articles. See: 'Neo-liberalism and ordoliberalism - One or two critiques? An Introduction'
