Overview
One of only a few courses in London accredited by six accountancy bodies, this course provides exam exemptions from ACCA, ICAEW, CIMA, AIA, CPA Australia and IFA (provided you select the corresponding option modules) and will fast-track you on a path to becoming a qualified accountant. With this qualification you can enter a career across several industries, businesses and organisations in the private, public or voluntary sectors.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
From day one, you'll develop the theoretical and practical skills needed to succeed as an accountant or finance professional. An interest in news and current affairs will be an asset as you'll examine and debate current financial issues in light of what you learn.
Throughout the course you'll learn about financial and management accounting and the business and regulatory environment in which businesses operate. You'll also learn about financial management and the role of the financial markets and key financial institutions.
major part of the course involves developing relevant practical skills to prepare you for employment. For example, you'll learn how to:
- Manipulate, analyse and interpret financial and non-financial data.
- Prepare financial reports.
- Apply accounting principles and techniques to a range of business problems.
- Use industry-standard software.
You'll also learn how to appraise evidence, present and communicate clearly, work in a team and conduct independent research when required, such as when preparing a final-year project on a topic of your choice.

The main aim of this module is to equip you and develop the academic skills necessary to study at an HEI. This includes an introduction to the structure of higher education and also the learning and study skills necessary to produce quality pieces of work.

The aim of this module is for you to develop confidence and autonomy through ‘learning by doing’ process. It will help you develop your academic literacy, appropriate academic voice and skills and to express argument(s) by using credible academic sources. It is also designed to ensure you understand the concept of academic integrity and associated protocols and the use of Word and referencing tools such as Endnote.

Business Law CloseBusiness Law
This module will provide you with knowledge of the constitution and forms of business entities. You will understand the relevant principles of UK law and the legislation governing the formation, structure, and operation of a business and its obligations. As part of the module, your will explore the legal obligations of a professional practitioner and of a professional practice in respect of employees. As you study the module and attend the law clinic, you will be able to analyse problems confronting a business, identify applicable legislation and apply appropriate legal principles.

Optional placement CloseOptional placement
This course offers the opportunity of year-long placement between years two and three. If you choose to take this option, you’ll spend your third year on a placement with a relevant company or organisation, adding valuable practical experience to your growing academic knowledge.

Advanced Financial Reporting CloseAdvanced Financial Reporting
This module will build on your prior year studies and extend your understanding of corporate financial reporting. In particular, you will develop the professional skills to examine and apply consolidation techniques in the preparation and assessment of group accounts. You will develop the analytical skills to solve complex financial reporting problems. You will also have the opportunity and expertise to consider relevant conceptual issues and the application of accounting standards to such issues.

This module aims to develop your understanding of corporate financial management decisions in the context of profit seeking organisations. You will also have the opportunity to examine and evaluate how such decisions may contribute to maximising shareholder value.

Optional ModulesAuditing CloseAuditing
The aim of the Module is to enable you to appreciate the nature, purposes, and detailed procedures of auditing and its relevance in today’s commercial environment. In particular, the module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the process of carrying out the assurance engagement and its application in the context of the professional framework.
HOW YOU'LL LEARN
Accounting and finance are practical, career-focused subjects. As far as possible, learning methods will reflect the tasks you'll be expected to carry out when you start work.
With an emphasis on learning practical skills, underpinned by a sound knowledge of key principles, theories and regulations, you'll learn in ways that include:
- Field trips to companies and financial institutions to see how professional accountants and finance professionals operate.
- Teamwork, to share ideas and insights and produce work together.
- Guest speakers representing a cross-section of finance, accounting and business expertise.
- Practical tasks. For example, learn how to trade in stocks and shares with our Bloomberg trading platform. This will develop investment management skills that will positively impact on your CV.
- Lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops.
You will be expected to undertake a great deal of independent study outside of formal teaching time, supported by our specialist business library and a selection of digital materials, financial databases, handbooks, notes and other resources.
With our optional placement year in the industry, you will 'learn by doing' while enhancing practical skills in the workplace. If you don't opt for the placement route, we'll support you in finding work experience or an internship during your course, which can then earn you credits towards your final degree.

HOW YOU'LL BE ASSESSED
- Foundation Year - 100% coursework.
- Year 1 - Combination of coursework and exams, with two modules comprising a 50% exam component.
- Year 2 - 40% coursework, 60% examination.
- Year 3 - 80% -100 exams plus two modules comprising 20% coursework.
You will receive detailed feedback outlining your strengths and areas of improvement as we aim to provide feedback on assessments within 15 working days.

YOUR FUTURE CAREER
A UEL degree in accounting and finance will leave you in an excellent position to gain work in a variety of business sectors.
Some students choose to continue their studies with a relevant postgraduate degree, such as the MSc International Accounting & Finance, MSc Professional Accounting, MSc Financial Management or MSc Risk Management.
Please note that we also offer an integrated Master's version of this course - MAccFin (Hons) Accounting and Finance.
Others obtain employment and go on to achieve their ACCA, ICAEW, CIMA, CPA Australia, IFA or AIA qualifications while working.
The kind of roles that you can expect to be open to you after graduation include:
- Financial accountant

- Internal or external auditor.
In addition to large accounting and consultancy firms, other financial services institutions such as banks, building societies and insurance companies are in the market for well-qualified, ambitious accounting and finance graduates.
This degree will also leave you well placed to find employment in any other commercial sector, from retail and manufacturing to pharmaceuticals and utilities. You could also work for a charity or in the public sector.
If you'd like to start your own business, you can make use of the incubation space in our Business Centre, providing office accommodation, IT and access to business advisers and mentors.
